Historical Notes 1936 marked a unique footnote in Barnstable High School football history, as head coach W.P. Bangs launched the first-ever Spring football pre-season. The following quote was taken from his notes from the 1936 school year: "For the first time in the history of Barnstable High School football, practice was held during the Spring. This gave Coach Bangs a good look at his squad for the coming year. Practice was held for one month and at the end of that time, he arranged a game with Provincetown High School which was held on the Barnstable High School Field. Barnstable made its spring football debut by defeating Provincetown, 20-0. Barnstable showed a great deal of power which promises Coach Bangs of a good team next fall. Spring practice was a great success to the boys on the squad as well, as Mr. Bangs as it gave him a good chance to see his charges under power. Spring football should be held every year as it gives the boys a good start for the coming season." (These notes were transcribed, verbatim, and are seen here in their unedited version.) |
